Fishing the Blue River Silverthorne, Colorado

Back to Articles Homepage

We will have many articles addressing your fishing strategies as it pertains to fishing the Blue River as it flows from its headwaters above Breckinridge through the town of Silverthorne out to Green Mountain Reservoir and from there to the confluence with the Colorado River just outside of Kremmling Colorado.

This river has something for every type of angler.  It has 2 very nice reservoirs to go after some Lakers and kokonee salmon, plus you have the river itself that runs in excess of 25 miles of primo fishing.  Being a tail water fishery through the town of Silverthorne it will continue to have open flow areas year round.  Some of the access points can require some serious effort in the winter time and after that tough walk in you find that 80% of the river is frozen over. ( a pair of snowshoes is an extremely handy item to have) Be sure to check in with the locals to find out about where there is some open water.

Winter is a time of small flies and tough conditions, where our summers can be warm, windless and some BIG bugs coming off for hours at a time, with some true lunkers taking the big dry flies you offer them.  (Green Drakes, Caddis, PMD’s, Stimulators, Parachute Adams, Para. Hoppers, Royal Trudes, and the like)
